Sultan of Kelantan to Be Crowned New Malaysian King in December

BANGKOK – Malaysia’s council of regents met at the Istana Negara palace Friday in Kuala Lumpur and decided that the Sultan of Kelantan will ascend the country’s rotational throne.

Muhammad V will be crowned the new Malaysian king on Dec. 13 and will reign for the stipulated period of five years, the council said in a statement.

The Sultan of Kelantan will succeed the Sultan of Kedah, Abdul Halim Mu’adzam, 88, who is the only one among the different surviving monarchs in Malaysia to have occupied the throne twice, between 1970-1975, and again from 2011-2016.

Malaysia is divided into 13 states, of which nine are monarchies and their monarchs make up the council, which is officially known as the Conference of Rulers.
