Duke and Duchess of Cambridge Name Newborn Daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana

LONDON – The youngest daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, born on Saturday, will be named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, the Kensington Palace announced on Monday.

William and Kate’s newborn baby girl will be officially addressed as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.

It is thought that the name given to Charlotte, the female version of Charles, is after her grandfather and heir to the throne, Prince Charles, while Elizabeth is a tribute to her great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and Diana is in honor of her deceased paternal grandmother, Princess Diana.

Princess Charlotte was born on Saturday at 7:34 a.m. GMT, weighing eight pounds and three ounces (3.7 kilograms), at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.

The birth of the Princess of Cambridge was officially marked by gun salute in Hyde Park and the Tower of London, according to British tradition.

The youngest daughter of William, 32, and Kate, 33, is fourth in line to the British throne, behind her brother, Prince George of Cambridge, who on July 22 will be two years old; her father; and her grandfather, Prince Charles.
