Belgian Monarchs Visit European Institutions

BRUSSELS Ė Belgiumís King Philippe and Queen Mathilde visited Wednesday European Union institutions in Brussels, where they met with commission and parliamentary leaders.

Queen Mathilde, who wore a black skirt and orange top, arrived at the European Parliament on crutches and had to lean on her husband while posing for photographers with the institutionís president, German Social Democrat Martin Schulz.

According to the Belgian press, Mathilde suffered an accident while skiing during winter holidays.

The monarchs signed a visitorís book and met with leaders of political parties before going to the European Commission headquarters, where they were received by its president, Jean-Claude Juncker.

Mathilde and Philippe made the most of their visit and greeted the 27 members of the EU decision-making body.

The Belgian royals will also be received Wednesday by the president of the European Council, Donald Tusk.
