Felipe VI Praises Royal Theatre for Strengthening Spain’s Collective Identity

MADRID – Spain’s King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia presided a Royal Theatre Trust meeting, during which the institution announced it will hold an important international opera conference in May.

The monarch praised the theatre’s contribution “to strengthening the country’s collective identity.”

“Culture requires institutions such as the Royal Theatre, which citizens can recognize as theirs and which strengthens their collective identity,” the king stressed on Tuesday to the approximately 30 trust members present at the meeting, which looked at the plans to celebrate the entity’s bicentenary and its 20th anniversary since its reopening.

In the meeting, which was presided by Felipe VI and his wife Letizia, it was also announced that a commission will be set up with representatives from the Ministry of Inland Revenue and Public Administration, the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Madrid Regional Government and the Madrid City Council with the aim of supervising the celebration’s activities.
