BRUSSELS – Belgian King Philippe and his wife, Queen Mathilde, welcomed on Wednesday Spain’s royal couple in an official ceremony at the entrance to the Royal Palace in Brussels.
King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia arrived in Brussels on Tuesday for their first state visit to the country as part of a European tour that also took them to Luxembourg, accompanied by Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.
After the welcome ceremony, at which the countries’ national anthems were played and there was a review of troops and honor guards on horseback, the two couples met at the palace’s Goya hall.
King Felipe and his wife signed the guest book before heading to the Egmont Palace for a meeting with Prime Minister Charles Michel and Foreign Minister Didier Reynders.
The couple also visited the federal Parliament before returning to the royal palace for an official lunch.
