Dutch Monarchs Warmly Received by Spanish Royal Family

MADRID – The Netherlands’ King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima on Wednesday made an “introductory visit” to Madrid, where they were warmly received by the Spanish royal family.

The five-hour visit is the first by the Dutch monarchs to Spain since their coronation on April 30.

Beginning with their arrival at Torrejon air base on board a jet piloted by the Dutch king, the visit was sprinkled with signals demonstrating the closeness between the respective royal families as well as the friendly relationship maintained by Spain’s Crown Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, with the Dutch monarchs.

Felipe and Letizia were on hand to receive the royal visitors at Torrejon and escort them to Zarzuela Palace for a luncheon hosted by King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia.

Later the guests visited Parliament, where they spent almost an hour in conversation with eight lawmakers regarding the political and economic outlook for the European Union and Spain.

The visit concluded with a meeting between the Dutch royal pair and Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy. EFE
