Beatrice Rangel: Monkey Business
Former Venezuela Presidential Chief of Staff Beatrice Rangel looks at the tea leaves of what the outgoing Year of the Monkey means for relations between Donald Trump, England's Theresa May and Taiwan's Tsai Ing-Wen.

By Beatrice E. Rangel

Theresa May's subdued guise as she emerged from the White House luncheon to co-preside a press conference with Donald J Trump perfectly matched the strenuous exchanges that had taken place since her arrival to the presidential house.

Astrologically it was not the best day to venture into consensus building tasks given that it was the last day of the Year of the Monkey which presides over the unexpected while fostering the break of tradition and habits.

But being monkey herself -- given that she had been born in 1956 -- Theresa May faced the challenge head on.

And her counterpart, President Trump was coming from a rather hectic week of confrontation and corrections that made him ripe and anxious to end the roller coaster ride with a harmonious note.

And that little window of opportunity was fully exploited by May who presented her list of agreements with the President of the United States by reading well-crafted and better delivered notes that were sharp enough to include quotations form President Trump who we just learned is now 100% behind NATO.

May also indicated the areas of discord which basically are Russia and China.

But all in all, it was a wonderfully performed task in what will certainly be a never-ending journey to introduce Donald Trump into world affairs while keeping him interested in a foreign agenda.

With Theresa May, the number of inner circle foreign leaders grows to two.

First was the President of Taiwan Tsai Ing-Wen, a woman of aboriginal origins who is regarded as a great consensus builder throughout Asia.

Ms. Tsai also is the first president to be single, the first to have never held an elected executive post before presidency, and the first to be popularly elected without having previously served as the Mayor of Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan or the Republic of China.

Ms. Tsai was also born in 1956 - a Monkey Year.

She seems to have made a great impression on Donald Trump given her demurred demeanor and her command of geopolitics. Those close to the power couloirs in Asia report that the conversation established Ms. Tsai as a future confidant to POTUS that does not raise Beijing's concern.

Because as Chinese astrology tells us monkeys are natural entertainers, superb performers and attractive operators.

Both ladies share these virtues that in the eyes of our POTUS are essential attributes for succeeding in politics in this century.

Further the year that just elapsed was that of the Metal Monkey, a sign that shares its dominating element with that of the dog. Donald J. Trump was born in the year of the dog and thus enjoys good luck when surrounded by metal monkeys like Theresa May and Ms. Tsai.

For this year, which is the year of the Rooster, the Chinese astrologers forecast enhanced luck and many blessings coming from auspicious stars for the monkeys.

For the dogs, it will be a hectic year juggling work and their personal life.

Many activities will require time and focus at the expense of personal life and enhanced happiness.

As we enter the year of the rooster, we pray to God that the beneficial liaisons born in the year of monkey between Donald J. Trump, Theresa May, and Tsai Ing-Wen last forever and ever and ever for the sake of world peace and understanding.
