Beatrice Rangel: U.S. Politics as an Entertainment Proposition
Former Venezuela Presidential Chief of Staff Beatrice Rangel takes a look at the amusement of the next four years of Reality TV with President Donald Trump.

By Beatrice E. Rangel

I truly look forward to the next four years which will be presided by Donald J. Trump.

As the aftermath of eight Obama years turns into a nostalgic farewell, the road ahead promises to be fully entertaining. Away with the boring images of a President led on every instance by principles which rarely are amusing.

We shall also be spared of attempts by POTUS to enhance our understanding of the times we live in through educational speeches.

We shall never have to watch POTUS again clearing tears or singing Amazing Grace when saddened by the resurgence of racism in our society.

We will not be reminded by the First Lady of the importance of eating fresh veggies. We will not be reminded of our age by a young and vibrant couple, because the new POTUS will be older than us late baby boomers. In short, we are done with the age of dullness and ready to face a brand new political cycle full of excitement.

And excitement we are having!

Besides engaging in a well thought-out and much useful "Thank You Tour" to reignite his electoral base, our forthcoming POTUS is implementing a brand-new approach to creating his executive team. Having excelled at a TV reality show, he understands the value of a well-planned casting exercise in terms of creating expectations and maintaining the audience's interest in the unfolding drama.

And the exercise has proved to be useful in terms of both attention grabbing as well as respect for his open mind.

TV crews stationed at the Fifth Avenue Trump Tower have seen a parade of invitees to the President Elect quarters that go from Investment bankers to former VPs to military chiefs to intellectuals who are being cast for cabinet slots or first row executive positions.

Interestingly enough, each casting ends with the visit of the person least likely to be nominated for the job. Mitt Romney's visit to the President Elect preceded the announcement of the choice for Secretary of Defense which favored General James Mattis.

Rudy Giuliani had fail to reach the lobby when the announcement on the choice of the Attorney General was launched which, as we all know, favored Senator Jeff Sessions.

Al Gore's visit preluded the nomination of Scott Pruitt -- an environment conservative -- to EPA.

And this is precisely where the charm of the procedure lies: it arouses interest and diverts focus from the real choice up and until it is unveiled!! Through these means, the President Elect has managed to resurrect TV watching in a country where its audiences were melting away. A feat that not even Disney had accomplished!!

According to the performing arts dictionary, casting is a pre-production process for selecting a certain type of actor, singer or dancer for a particular role or part in a script involving a dramatic production meant for an audience.

Casting is deemed to be fundamental to the success of any production as it matches talents with performance demands.

Should this approach to creating a government team work, we can be thankful to destiny, given that we shall have a superb governing team to execute President's Trump vision for America. Should it fail, we could perhaps face a Hollywood bum with worldwide consequences. But only time will tell.

And as loyal citizens, all we can now do is turn into couch potatoes and enjoy the production, praying that the spirit of Frank Capra -- who was masterful at wrapping dark themes into happy endings -- guides the works and thoughts of this upcoming U.S. administration!!
