Gas Leak in China Coal Mine Kills 18 Miners

BEIJING – A coal mine accident in central China’s Hunan Province killed 18 miners, while 37 others had to be treated with symptoms of poisoning due to a gas leak, Xinhua news agency reported on Monday.

The gas leak occurred at 11:00 am local time Sunday (0300 GMT) at the Jilinqiao well in Huangfengqiao town, when 55 workers were inside the facility.

Authorities are analyzing poisonous gas, while police detained those responsible for the mine and investigations are under way.

Hundreds of miners are killed every year in coal mines in China, where this raw material is still the main source of energy.
