Coins Commemorating Prado Museum’s Bicentenary Reach Japan

TOKYO – Coins commemorating the bicentenary of Spain’s Prado Museum will go on sale from next week in Japan, where they will be available for reserving through 41 banking institutions, the importers said on Friday.

A spokesperson for Taisei Coins, an importing firm, told EFE that they have been working with Fabrica Nacional de Moneda y Timbre – Spain’s mint – for some time to bring these coins to Japan.

Taisei Coins imported the Barcelona Olympic Games (1992) commemorative coins to Japan earlier.

The complete collection consists of six coins – three gold of €100 denomination and three silver of €10 denomination – depicting works from the Prado Museum’s collection.

Reservations for the coins are set to begin on Jan. 21, end on Feb. 8 and the buyers will receive them in early March, Taisei Coins said.

The coins range in cost from 49,680 yen ($454) for a three-piece silver set to 356,400 yen for set of all three gold coins.
