Wendy Guerra Discards Heroes vs. Villains Trope in New Novel

MEXICO CITY – In her new novel, “El mercenario que coleccionaba obras de arte,” Cuban writer Wendy Guerra avoids the scenario of good guys against bad guys in favor of stressing the similarities between revolutionaries and their foes.

“This book will scandalize the left and the right because there’s not much difference between guerrillas and counter-revolutionaries,” the winner of the Bruguera prize for her 2006 novel “Todos se van” told EFE.

Published by Penguin Random House, the book revolves around Adrian Falcon, a Cuban-born soldier of fortune who grows disenchanted with ideologies in his old age.

“A writer should get out of her comfort zone and this was my chance to do it. I wrote from inside a man’s skin. Though the topic is Cuban, this is more a book about Central America or Latin America,” she said.
