Kazakh Fashion Makes a Splash in Madrid

MADRID – Sequins, bright colors and solid embroidery marked the Kazakh-inspired fashion show held on Wednesday in the heart of Madrid.

The creations presented by five Kazakh designers showed their unique vision of fashion in the Central Asian country from a modern and current point of view, with a predominance of metallic tones and long and “midi” dresses.

The Kazakh Embassy in Madrid, which organized the show, wants to publicize the country’s traditional textile culture, according to Erkezhan Dyussenbayeva, wife of Kazakhstan’s ambassador to Spain.

“The whole collection has Kazakh national ethnic elements. We have tried to show all the richness and beauty of traditional Kazakh costume,” Dyussenbayeva told EFE.

“We have five designers, two of whom are already recognized internationally and the other three, who are starting their career, we wish them good luck,” she added.

Aigerim Niyazova, Eugenia Zhandarbekova, Damira Nurlan, Gulnara Kassym and Layazzat Makatov – whose specialty is jewelry – presented their designs to a mostly female audience, who were surprised and delighted with what they saw during the event.

“I wish our designers a lot of success. Kazakhstan must show itself to the world because it is a wonderful country,” organizer Saule Kaisar said at the end of the presentation.

The deputy ambassador, Olzhas Suleimenov, applauded the program and said that there are many lovers of ethnic Kazakh fashion among Spaniards.

“We are delighted that this traditional Kazakh fashion show takes place in Madrid, one of the European capitals of fashion,” Suleimenov said.
