BARCELONA – Barcelona’s Argentine star Lionel Messi received on Friday his fourth Golden Boot, a trophy rewarded to the European soccer Leagues’ top scorer in 2016/2017 season.
Messi, who scored 37 goals in the last season, received the trophy from teammate, Uruguayan Luis Suarez in a ceremony attended by the former’s wife Antonella Roccuzzo and their son Thiago as well as Barcelona’s president Joseph Maris Bartomeu, among others.
“I have always said the individual awards are result of a team effort. This award is for all (his teammates) without them, I would not have been able to score the goals I notched,” Messi said during the ceremony.
He said that he had to work hard off the field to improve on his play, adding that he relished being a soccer player.
Messi downplayed being left on the bench during the 0-0 draw against Juventus in UEFA Champions League action, saying there is a need for him to take care of himself.
The 30-year-old Messi won the Golden Boot in 2009-2010, 2011-2012 and 2012-2013.
