CSKA Wins to Stay Alive in Fight for Champions Knockout Stage

MOSCOW – CSKA Moscow defeated Benfica 2-0 on Wednesday in the penultimate match of the UEFA Champions League group stage, sustaining the Russian club’s hopes of qualifying for the round of 16.

Georgi Shchennikov opened the scoring for CSKA with a goal just 13 minutes into the match.

An own goal by Benfica defender Jardel in the 56th minute made it 2-0 for the Russian team.

With the win, CSKA is provisionally in second place in Group A with nine points, three points ahead of Switzerland’s Basel, who host Manchester United later Wednesday.

Benfica suffered their fifth straight defeat.

Man United, who have won all of their matches, lead Group A with 12 points.
