BARCELONA – Barcelona defender Javier Mascherano suffered an injury to his right hamstring and will be out of action for about one month, the Spanish club said on Wednesday.
The Argentina defender sustained the injury during Tuesday’s friendly between his national team and Nigeria in Russia, the host country of the 2018 World Cup.
“Mascherano is expected to be out for around four weeks,” the Catalan club confirmed in a statement following medical tests on Mascherano.
Mascherano played the 90 minutes of the international friendly, in which Argentina lost to Nigeria 4-2.
The 33-year-old appeared in 10 games for Barcelona this season, including six in La Liga, two in the UEFA Champions League, one in the Copa del Rey and one in the Spanish Super Cup.
