LONDON – Swiss tennis great Roger Federer rolled to a 6-4, 7-6 (4) win Jack Sock of the United States in their opener at the ATP Boris Becker Group Finals.
It took Federer 91 minutes to garner his 50th win of the year and secure the fourth victory over the American player in as many matches.
Making his debut in the season-ending tournament, Sock was unable to prevail in his first service game, a failing which proved to be decisive, although he raised his level of play later in the match.
Both players held serve through the second set, with Federer losing just two first-serve points, forcing a tiebreak.
Federer took 4-2 lead in the tiebreak and never looked back to seal his 53th win in the eight-man tournament in 65 matches.
The 19-time Grand Slam champion is seeking his seventh tournament title, which is being held at the O2 Arena.
