SAN PEDRO SULA, Honduras – Honduras and Australia played to a 0-0 draw on Friday in the first leg of their intercontinental playoff for a berth in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The outcome leaves the Socceroos with the upper hand heading into next Wednesday’s second leg in Sydney.
Honduras made a bright start in front of the more than 30,000 spectators at Estadio Olimpico Metropolitano in the northern city of San Pedro Sula.
Though the hosts launched plenty of attacks, they failed to convert any of the handful of chances they got in front of Mathew Ryan’s goal and the initiative passed to the visitors.
Australia’s Tomi Juric had the best opportunity of the first half, but flubbed the shot.
Honduran substitute Michael Chirinos missed the mark with his shot in the 63rd minute, while Ryan made a solid stop against Carlo Costly in the 81st.
