Alberto Moreno Says He Did Not Expect to Join Spain National Team

MADRID – Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno said on Thursday that he was surprised by Spain’s national coach Julen Lopetegui calling him up for two upcoming friendly matches.

Moreno joins La Roja – the Spanish national soccer team – for the first time in three years, ahead of friendlies against Costa Rica on Nov. 11 and Russia on Nov. 14.

The 25-year-old Moreno said in a press conference that he did not expect to play on the national team again since it had been three years since he had been called to play and after going through a difficult spell in his career at Liverpool last year.

During his tough times in Liverpool during the 2016 season, Moreno revealed that his family’s support was crucial. He stressed that his newborn daughter made him forget the criticism around his play.

After Moreno had fallen out of favor with coach Jürgen Klopp, he was able to regain Klopp’s confidence with hard work.

Now this season at Liverpool, Moreno said that he is playing at a great level.

Moreno expressed confidence in the new air Lopetegui brought to the Spanish national squad.

Finally, he downplayed the Islamic State terror organization’s threats of an attack against soccer stars such as Argentina’s Lionel Messi at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.
