Verdasco Upsets Thiem, Advances to Paris Masters Quarters for First Time

PARIS Spanish tennis player Fernando Verdasco upset Austrian Dominic Thiem 6-4, 6-4 on Thursday to secure a place in the Paris Masters quarterfinals for the first time.

Verdasco needed one hour and 23 minutes to stun the fifth seed Thiem, who has already booked a place in the season-ending ATP Finals.

The 33-year-old Verdasco saved three break points out of four, while seizing on three out of nine break points.

With this victory, he has extended his lead in the head to head matches to 2-0.

Next Verdasco is set to take on either fellow Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut or Croatian Marin Cilic, who are scheduled to play each other later on Thursday.
