Spainís Ferrer and Almagro Knocked Out of Wimbledon

LONDON Ė Franceís Nicolas Mahut knocked off Spainís David Ferrer, the No. 13 seed, in straight sets, while Uzbekistanís Denis Istomin beat another Spaniard, Nicolas Almagro, in second-round play at Wimbledon on Thursday.

The Mahut-Ferrer match had been suspended due to rain on Wednesday, with the Frenchman up 3-1.

When play resumed, Mahut got going quickly, rolling to a 6-1, 6-4, 6-3 win.

ďI need to improve in all areas. Iím really very far from my level, especially mentally, I canít see to stay focused during an entire match, thereís not much else I can say,Ē Ferrer said.

The 34-year-old Ferrer, a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2012 and 2013, had beaten Mahut in their only previous meeting, a match at Paris Bercy in 2011 on an indoor court.

Ferrer said in his post-match press conference that he was not dealing with injuries.

ďThe problem is that I donít know what the problem is,Ē Ferrer said. ďI donít have any strength or a competitive attitude, today and during many matches this year. Itís the reality, thereís no real reason because Iím fine, but I was struggling to compete and thatís something new for me, because it has never happened to me,Ē Ferrer said.

Istomin, for his part, defeated Almagro 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-2, pushing his career record against the Spaniard to 6-0.

Almagro has taken just one set from the Uzbek in their six meetings, which have occurred on all surfaces.

Istomin, whose best Wimbledon result was the round of 16 in 2012, will play Belgiumís David Goffin, who crushed Franceís Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-0, 6-3, in the third round.
