Seoul Says North Korean Defector Belonged to Elite Army Unit

SEOUL – The North Korean soldier who defected recently to the South belonged to the country’s elite army unit, the South Korean government said on Tuesday.

In a press conference, unification minister Cho Myoung-gyon revealed new details about the soldier, who is currently recovering from bullet injuries he received during his escape on Nov. 13, when he was shot down by the North Korean army.

The minister said that the soldier – aged 24 and known only by his surname Oh – was deployed in the Joint Security Area, where only elite units are stationed.

While trying to stop Oh, one of the North Korean soldiers reportedly had crossed the military demarcation line which divides the two Koreas briefly, which – along with the firing in South Korea’s direction – was in violation of the ceasefire agreement which ended the Korean war (1950-1953), the South Korean defense minister had said Monday.
