At Least Two Dead, 30 Injured in Factory Explosion in Eastern China

BEIJING – At least two people have been killed and 30 injured in an explosion at a factory in the eastern Chinese city of Ningbo in Zhejiang province on Sunday, according to media reports citing local officials.

Several rescue teams and ambulances were at the site of the accident to attend to the victims, including the two deceased and 30 injured, two of whom were in critical condition, Chinese broadcaster CGTN reported.

Images released via epa showed workers sifting through the rubble as part of the ongoing rescue operation.

The explosion occurred in an industrial area while several cleaning personnel were working inside the factory, where the blast took place.

According to China’s state-run news agency Xinhua, the explosion happened on Sunday around 9 am and caused several adjoining buildings to collapse.

Several videos of the accident site broadcast by the Chinese state-run broadcaster showed several streets covered with rubble, the charred remains of many cars, as well as bodies on the ground.

Local authorities were investigating the cause of the accident.
