ERBIL, Iraq – A Kurdish Islamic cleric has been shot dead by a group of unknown people in Erbil, a Kurdish police source told EFE on Wednesday.
Erbil police spokesman Huker Aziz said cleric Hoshiar Ismail, the Imam of Omar Bandiana mosque, was gunned down on Tuesday night in front of his home in Shadi neighborhood of Erbil, capital of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan.
Ismail was transferred to a hospital after the attack, where he died of serious injuries.
The spokesman said several security force members had been dispatched to the scene to begin investigations into the attack.
The police spokesman declined to describe the incident as a terror attack or a common crime, but said investigations to determine the motive for the attack and identify the perpetrators were ongoing.
Ismail was one of the founders of the Islamic Union of Kurdistan, one of the most prominent Islamist political parties in Iraqi Kurdistan.
