MOSUL, Iraq – The Islamic State killed on Monday six former police and military officials, who had worked previously with the Iraqi security forces, an official told EFE on Monday. The victims were part of the Iraqi police and army before the city fell into the hands of IS in June 2014, Saleh Hassan al-Jaburi, mayor of al-Qayara district, located about 50 kilometers (31 miles) south of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, told EFE. The IS group shot the victims dead after accusing them of trying to flee from al-Qayara to join the People’s Mobilization Forces in Makhmour district, southeast of Mosul. Many families fled from several villages and surrounding areas of Mosul to other areas free of IS jihadists’ control. On June 10, 2014, the IS occupied large areas of Mosul and northern Iraq, and then proclaimed a caliphate in the territories under its control in Iraq and neighboring Syria. |
