Attack on Libyan Security Checkpoint Leaves 6 Dead

TRIPOLI An armed group attacked a checkpoint on Thursday in the south of Misrata, a city situated 200 hundred kilometers (124 miles) east of Tripoli, leaving six people dead and wounding two others, a security source in the city told Efe.

Misrata is controlled by Fajr Libya (Dawn of Libya), an Islamist militia that supports the dissident government based in Tripoli.

The source said the group was composed of five men armed with Kalashnikov assault rifles as well as portable grenade launchers.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the source was convinced it was the branch of the Islamic State in Libya.

Since the last elections, two governments have emerged in Libya: an Islamist one in Tripoli and the other, the internationally recognized one in Tobruk; both are struggling for power amid chaos and civil war that has raged on in Libya since 2011, after the international community and NATO forces contributed to the overthrow the dictatorial regime of Muammar Gaddafi.
