Chinese PM to Attend Rio+20, Visit 4 Latin American Countries

BEIJING – Prime Minister Wen Jiabao plans to attend the U.N. Conference on Sustainable Development, known as Rio+20, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and will make official visits to Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile from June 20 to June 26, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Sunday.

The premier will present China’s sustainable development policy to the conference and call for the strengthening of international cooperation, Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Wenmin said.

Wen plans to meet with high-level officials at Rio+20 to exchange views on different issues, Liu said.

The premier will meet with the leaders of Brazil, Uruguay, Argentina and Chile to discuss bilateral relations, regional matters and international issues of common interest.

Wen will address the U.N. Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, or ECLAC, in Santiago, Chile.

The premier’s official visits to the four Latin American countries are designed to expand bilateral relations and build links between China and the region, Liu said.

Wen was invited to visit the region by Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, Uruguayan President Jose Mujica, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez and Chilean President Sebastian Piñera.
