Italy Court Hands Life Sentences to 8 Ex-Military over Right-Wing Repression in Latin America

ROME – An Italian court on Tuesday sentenced eight former military personnel from Bolivia, Chile, Peru and Uruguay to life imprisonment over the deaths of 20 people between the 1970s and the 1980s.

All 20 victims were Latin Americans of Italian descent and died as a result of right-wing repression in several South American countries.

Although 27 suspects faced charges over the deaths during the so-called “Operation Condor,” those sentenced were: Chileans Hernan Jeronimo Ramirez and Rafael Ahumada Valderrama; Uruguayan Juan Carlos Blanco; Bolivians Luis Garcia Meza and Luis Arce Gomez and Peruvians Francisco Morales Bermudez, Pedro Richter Prada and German Ruiz Figueroa.
