MOSCOW – Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov is meeting the foreign ministers’ quartet from the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States in the city of Sochi on Monday, in a bid to boost cooperation with the regional bloc, the Russian ministry said.
Led by Dominican Foreign Minister Miguel Vargas – whose country holds the pro tempore presidency of the bloc – the meeting will include diplomatic heads from Ecuador, El Salvador and Dominica, Guillaume Long, Hugo Martinez and Francine Baron, respectively, as well as Nicaraguan government representative Sidharta Marin.
The meeting is aimed at strengthening relations and exploring programs of cooperation, investment and sharing experience of various fields of mutual interest.
In mid-2015, CELAC and Russia had agreed to kickstart a Permanent Mechanism of Political Dialogue and Cooperation, based on equality, comprehensive cooperation and mutual benefit.
The agreement also seeks to deepen and diversify cooperation between the two entities and establish a political dialogue.
The meeting is expected to conclude with a joint declaration that lays down a roadmap for their cooperation.
Later, Lavrov will hold bilateral meetings with his counterparts from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador and Dominica.
