Chinese Foreign Minister to Embark on Four-Nation Latin American Tour

BEIJING – Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is set to visit Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia and Colombia as part of an official tour from Oct. 3-9, ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said in a press conference on Friday.

According to Geng, China feels the visit will strengthen its traditional friendship with the four countries, adding they are important Latin American nations with ties that China holds in high esteem.

Wang will meet with his counterparts from the four countries to examine bilateral relations and discuss regional and international matters that are of mutual interest, said Geng, noting that China will seek to foster greater political trust and cooperation for mutual gains with each of the four countries.

Latin American countries have in recent years increasingly highlighted growing strategic partnerships with China, with Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas noting last year that “the relationship between Ecuador and China has been fruitful and successful,” referring to financial cooperation between the coastal South American nation and the Asian economic powerhouse, as cited by the Ecuadorean news agency Andes.
