Xi Jinping’s Special Envoy to Attend Inauguration of Colombian President

BEIJING – China’s Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng will travel to Colombia as special envoy of Chinese President Xi Jinping for the inauguration ceremony of President-elect Ivan Duque, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday.

The visit “showcases our value for relations. We are willing to work with the new administration to carry on our relations and bring fruitful results to both our peoples and countries,” said Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson, Geng Shuang, while making the announcement.

Geng recalled that Colombia and the People’s Republic of China have had diplomatic ties since 1980 and have “sound bilateral relations (with) close high level interactions, consolidated mutual political trust.”

In Bogota, China will open one of its largest embassies in Latin America, having bought a mansion belonging to the deceased druglord Gonzalo Rodriguez for $17.4 million, where it is expected to move its diplomatic legation.
