Attack Kills 3 Police Officers in Colombia

BOGOTA – At least three police officers were killed and one was reported missing in an ambush in a rural area outside La Vega, a city in the southwestern Colombian province of Cauca, officials said.

Initial reports indicate that the police officers, who belonged to a criminal investigations unit from Bogota, were removing a body from a crime scene when they were attacked by gunmen armed with assault rifles.

“Our colleagues were carrying out a mission when they were attacked. They responded to the attack with their service weapons, but, unfortunately, the bandits outnumbered them,” a police spokesman told Cali’s El Pais newspaper.

The Attorney General’s Office sent a unit to investigate the attack and search for the assailants.

Cauca province is one of the regions most affected by the long-running internal conflict in Colombia and both guerrilla groups and drug gangs operate there.
