MEDELLIN – The European Union’s special envoy for the peace process in Colombia, Eamon Gilmore, said on Tuesday that the disappearance of Spanish journalist Salud Hernandez was “highly disturbing,” but he remained hopeful that authorities would find her soon.
The EU official said in a press conference in the northwestern city of Medellin that he had no information on who was behind the disappearance of the journalist or whether she was being held by an armed group.
Gilmore is in the city to attend the “Business Opportunities for Colombia in the Post-conflict Context” conference.
The EU “supports” the work of Colombian authorities and the government in trying to “locate the journalist and ensure her safety,” Gilmore said.
The EU is committed to a “free press” and the right of journalists to do their work without intimidation, fear and harm, Gilmore said.
Hernandez, a correspondent for Spain’s El Mundo newspaper and columnist for the Colombian daily El Tiempo, was seen for the last time in the city of El Tarra over the weekend.
