Venezuela’s Ruling Party Wins Major Mayoralties

CARACAS – Candidates from the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela won the mayoral elections in the country’s most important cities but less than half of voters took part, Venezuela’s National Electoral Council said Sunday.

Turnout stood at 47.32 percent, the National Electoral Council said.

Three of the main opposition parties did not participate in the voting because of their distrust of the electoral body.

After casting his ballot on Sunday, President Nicolas Maduro confirmed the threat already made by other government officials that opposition parties who refused to participate in the local elections will be prohibited from fielding candidates in the 2018 presidential vote.
