Minister Announces Probe into Unauthorized Use of Force in Caracas

CARACAS – Venezuelan Interior and Justice Minister Nestor Reverol announced on Monday the launching of an investigation into the “unwarranted and disproportionate use” of force by police during a Caracas demonstration in which a teenage boy died.

“The main hypothesis within the investigation initiated (as a result of) these deeds presumes the unwarranted and disproportionate use of force,” said the minister in a series of Twitter posts referring to the protest, in which – he noted – there were also “several people injured.”

The Public Ministry confirmed on Monday the death of a 17-year-old boy, who was mortally wounded by gunfire during an opposition demonstration, raising to 75 the number of people killed in the wave of protests besetting Venezuela for the past 80 days.
