57 Undocumented Migrants Detained in Puerto Rico

SAN JUAN – Federal and local authorities detained 56 Haitians and a Cuban who were trying to enter Puerto Rico illegally, police in the U.S. commonwealth said on Tuesday.

According to a preliminary report, the U.S. Coast Guard detected the arrival of the undocumented migrants while on surveillance maneuvers at the island of Desecheo.

Authorities have not specified the number of men, women or children who landed on the island, but the Coast Guard has assumed custody of them for the moment and will soon turn them over to judicial authorities.

While the Haitians are likely to be repatriated, the Cuban migrant may be able to take advantage of Washington’s “wet foot, dry foot” policy, which mandates that Cubans who reach U.S. soil may remain and apply for permanent residence. EFE
