LONDON – British police arrested a 29-year-old man on Thursday in connection with the theft of two Olympic medals, the BBC reported.

Rower Alex Partridge and field-hockey player Hannah MacLeod, who both won bronze in the 2012 London Games, said their medals went missing as they were celebrating at an upscale club after a reception with Queen Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace.

Partridge and MacLeod took off their Olympic blazers – with the medals inside – at the club, where they and other British Olympians partied into the wee hours of Wednesday, police said.

The 31-year-old Partridge announced the theft on Twitter early Wednesday.

“My medal was also stolen at the same time. Totally devastated,” MacLeod, 28, tweeted soon after.

While Partridge’s blazer was recovered, MacLeod’s jacket and the two bronze medals remain missing, Scotland Yard said.

Police inspector James Harman made a public appeal to anyone who was at the club between midnight Tuesday and 5:00 a.m. Wednesday and saw “something suspicious” to contact authorities.

“I’m absolutely gutted that my Olympic bronze medal has been stolen. Winning it in August was an incredible highlight for me and for this to have happened is simply shattering,” MacLeod said in a statement.

“I would like to thank everyone – my friends and family, the media and the general public – for their overwhelming support of me and Alex Partridge. The response has been incredible,” she said. EFE
