TEGUCIGALPA – Five people were killed and four others wounded in an ambush in Las Brisas, a village in the western Honduran province of Ocotepeque, near the border with Guatemala, police said.
Raul Oliva, Raul Montufar, Alfredo Recinos, Isabel Recinos and Amanda Recinos died in the attack on Tuesday, the National Police precinct chief in the city of Ocotepeque, Eleazar Maldonado, said.
The names of the people wounded in the ambush were not released.
Between four and six gunmen opened fire “with large-caliber heavy weapons” on the victims as they drove through the village, the police chief said.
The ambush occurred around 3:00 p.m. in a mountainous section of Ocotepeque, Maldonado said.
Some of the people riding in the vehicle had been the targets of a prior attack, the police chief said.
Honduras’s 2011 homicide rate of 92 per 100,000 people was one of the highest in the world, a recent U.N. report said.
About 15 violent deaths occur in the Central American country daily, figures compiled by the National Police and human rights groups show. EFE
