LIMA – A battle Wednesday between army troops and suspected “narco-terrorists” in southern Peru’s Cuzco region left four soldiers wounded, the top official in La Convencion province said.

The clash took place about 200 meters (656 feet) from the center of the town of Yuveni, which is home to an army garrison, Fedia Castro told RPP radio.

The attackers, “apparently” snipers, opened fire on a group of soldiers and struck four of them, she said.

The wounded troops were taken to a hospital in Kiteni, about an hour away by road, Castro said, while the armed forces Joint Command told Efe the military was in the process of verifying the details of the incident.

Wednesday’s attack occurred in an area where remnants of the Shining Path rebel group are active.

The insurgents are now allied with drug traffickers, Peruvian authorities say. EFE
