MEXICO CITY – One person was killed and 19 others were injured during the running of the bulls at the Huamantlada festival in Tlaxcala, a state in central Mexico, officials said.

A 59-year-old man died while being treated for chest and abdominal injuries at the hospital in the city of Huamantla, the Tlaxcala Health Secretariat said, adding that the victim was gored twice by a bull.

Another person is listed in serious condition and the other victims sustained wounds from bulls’ horns or bruises while trying to escape from the animals during the traditional running of the bulls on Saturday in Huamantla, an event modeled on the famous San Fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain.

Organizers released 25 bulls, with runners following a route through Huamantla historic downtown area.

No one had died in the running of the bulls at the Huamantlada festival in recent years, but the event is dangerous, with 13 people injured last year and 19 injured in 2010.
