LONDON – Spain’s Javier Gomez Noya expressed his satisfaction with his silver-medal-winning performance on Tuesday in the men’s triathlon, in which he had to battle alone against brothers Alistair and Jonathan Brownlee and their allies Stuart Hayes and Richard Varga.

“It went very quickly. The cycling was very tough because there was no stopping at any time. Also, the Brownlees had ... Hayes and Varga, who were working for them and so I had to be very attentive because I was alone. In general terms, it was a great race, the best of the season,” said Gomez Noya.

He was especially happy with his performance in the swimming, where he finished second, and in the run, where he left Jonathan Brownlee behind and was vying with Alistair for the gold.

With a time of 1:46:36, just 11 seconds behind the champion, Gomez Noya finally secured the Olympic medal that got away from him in Beijing, where an injury and stomach problems prevented him from winning the event in which he had been favored, forcing him to settle for fourth place.

After this success, Gomez Noya is already setting his sights on the gold at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Gomez Noya’s silver medal was the fourth Spain had won in London, and just a few minutes later the country earned its first gold with the performance of windsurfer Marina Alabau. EFE
