BOGOTA – A broadcaster at a community radio station in the northern Colombian province of Atlantico was gunned down, his colleagues said Friday.
Jesus Martinez Orozco, a 42-year-old reporter for La Nueva radio, was shot by assailants on a motorcycle, station news director Antonio Cervantes told Efe by telephone.
The attack took place on a street in the town of Sabanalarga, Cervantes said, suggesting that the shooters killed the wrong person, as Martinez had not received any threats.
“The truth is that we are surprised. I don’t find an explanation for this murder,” the La Nueva news director said. “I think that Jesus’ murderers made a mistake.”
Martinez covered the cultural beat for La Nueva.
Regional police commanders in Barranquilla, the provincial capital, have offered a reward for information leading to the journalist’s killers, Cervantes said.
The murder comes two weeks after Argemiro Cardenas, a politician and radio station owner, was slain in the western city of Dosquebradas.
While seven journalists were killed in Colombia in 2010, only one media professional was murdered last year, though an association representing journalists reported 202 cases of aggression toward reporters in the Andean nation. EFE
