MEXICO CITY – At least one person died and three other people were hurt Thursday in a fireworks explosion in the central Mexican town of Tultepec, authorities told Efe.
“We have not been informed of the exact cause of the explosion,” municipal official Anahi Gutierrez said.
A fireworks factory in Tultepec’s La Saucera neighborhood exploded at around 10:15 a.m. and the resulting fire spread to two neighboring buildings that also contained fireworks.
One person died at the scene and one of the three injured people is in “very grave” condition at a clinic in Cuautitlan-Izcalli, Gutierrez said.
Media outlets, including Formato 21 radio, said the blast and subsequent blaze left three people dead and 13 others hurt.
Gutierrez said the fireworks factories in La Saucera were legally registered and underwent safety inspections every six months.
The zone of the explosion was cordoned off by army troops as firefighters and other first responders searched for additional victims. EFE
