MEXICO CITY – Mexican army soldiers dismantled a synthetic drug laboratory and confiscated more than a ton of marijuana in two separate operations in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, the Defense Secretariat said in a statement on Saturday.
In the first operation, troops found a laboratory for making synthetic drugs hidden in some underbrush in the city of Culiacan.
Among other substances, they found 240 liters (63 gallons) of liquid methamphetamine, 20 liters of monomethylamine, 360 liters of alcohol, 45 liters of sulfuric acid and 1,026 liters of an unknown substance.
Elsewhere, in an operation in a rural area outside the Sinaloa town of Mocorito, military personnel discovered 61 sacks filled with drugs.
The sacks contained more than a ton of marijuana, as well as 43.4 kilos (95 pounds) of seeds of that same plant and presses to compact the drug.
With the seizures, security forces “dealt a heavy blow to drug sales and prevented organized crime from obtaining a significant quantity of illicit funds,” the secretariat said.
Sinaloa is home to the drug cartel led by Joaquin “El Chapo” (Shorty) Guzman, Mexico’s most-wanted fugitive.
