GUATEMALA CITY – The mayor-elect of an Indian town in western Guatemala was shot and wounded by unidentified individuals on a rural highway, a National Civilian Police, or PNC, spokesman said Sunday.
Martin Saquic Poroj was wounded in the leg Saturday night and taken to a private hospital near the shooting scene, the PNC spokesman said.
The 41-year-old Saquic was elected mayor of San Andres Xecul, an Indian town in the western province of Totonicapan.
Saquic and his family were attacked while driving in their vehicle, and investigators have not determined if the shooting was politically motivated or just a robbery attempt, the PNC spokesman said.
The politician, who was elected mayor with the backing of the National Union for Hope and the Grand National Alliance, is out of danger and recuperating from his wounds, media reports said.
