MEXICO CITY – A 1-0 victory over Morelia solidified the UNAM Pumas’ hold on the top spot overall in Mexican first division soccer.
Francisco Palencia’s goal in the 57th minute of Sunday’s match left Pumas with a record of seven wins and three ties, the club’s best-ever start.
With 24 points, the Pumas are five points ahead of second-place Tigres, who battled to a 1-1 tie with San Luis on Saturday.
In Sunday’s other action, Toluca bounced back from last week’s 6-1 rout at the hands of Morelia to top Santos Laguna 3-1, while Cruz Azul beat America 2-0.
Chivas of Guadalajara had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Atlas on Saturday, which also saw floundering Pachuca fall 4-0 to Atlante, Estudiantes blank the Chiapas Jaguares 2-0 and Queretaro edge Puebla 2-1.
Tenth-round matches began Friday with defending champion Monterrey’s 1-0 victory over Necaxa. EFE
