GUATEMALA CITY – Alleged youth gang members shot three people to death as they were attending a funeral service in a Protestant church in a residential neighborhood on the southern outskirts of the Guatemalan capital, authorities announced on Sunday.
A spokesman for the National Civil Police, or PNC, told reporters that “two men who were driving in a green vehicle” arrived on Saturday night at the El Calvario church in the community of San Miguel Petapa and “fired at the people who were participating in the wake of a young man who had been murdered on Friday.”
Two men, identified as Carlos Monzon, 25, and Eddy Galindo, 30, died at the scene of the attack, while Christopher Lopez, 19, died after being admitted to a hospital.
Five other people were seriously wounded.
The PNC suspects that the mass shooting was a revenge attack staged by members of a rival gang.
Last Friday, 23 people were murdered in assorted violent acts around the country.
