MEXICO CITY – Enrique Rubio, the father of Mexican singer Paulina Rubio, died Tuesday in a hospital in this capital, his family announced. He was 67.
The singer had been spotted in recent days along with her husband, Spaniard Nicolar Vallejo-Najera, her brother and her mother at the two medical centers where Enrique Rubio was receiving care.
None of the family members has made any remarks to the press and, according to a statement provided by the singer’s spokespeople, she will not do so for the moment.
The father of the performer had been admitted to the hospital on the night of Jan. 3 after experiencing severe discomfort upon his return from Miami, where had had spent the Christmas holidays in the company of his children.
Paulina gave birth to a son – the singer’s first child – in November.
Enrique Rubio in subsequent days suffered a stroke and a heart attack, which left him partially paralyzed. His condition at first was said to be “critical but stable.”
Later, however, his condition worsened and he had to be transferred to another hospital to undergo hemodialysis, in an attempt to eliminate from his body the remains of the medications that had been used to put him into an induced coma.
Enrique Rubio died on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., and a wake will be held for him and cremation performed at the Panteon Frances in Mexico City.
He is survived by 39-year-old Paulina and by son Enrique, a businessman. EFE
