Colombian Governor Dies in Traffic Accident

BOGOTA – The governor of Colombia’s Guaviare province died while undergoing surgery for injuries sustained in a traffic accident, hospital spokesmen said.

Dagoberto Suarez died on Saturday hours after the traffic accident.

The governor underwent surgery to relieve pressure on his brain, but he did not survive the operation, the director of the provincial hospital in Villavicencio, Jesus Rosado, said.

Suarez, who was traveling with five bodyguards, was involved in an accident on the highway that links Granada, a city in Meta province, with San Jose del Guaviare, a city in southern Colombia.

The governor’s bodyguards were treated and released from the hospital.

Suarez, who was returning from a regional forum, was a member of the National Integration Party, or PIN.

He was elected Guaviare’s governor in February, replacing Oscar Lopez, who resigned over his alleged links to drug traffickers and militia boss Pedro Oliveiro Guerrero.
