SAN SALVADOR – El Salvador’s national police found more than $5.2 million in cash inside a partially buried barrel on a farm 56 kilometers (35 miles) from this capital, sources in the Attorney General’s Office told Efe on Friday.
The money is in 300 packets and the sum could grow, as about 25 percent of the bundles have yet to be counted, the sources said.
The cash may be linked to drug trafficking, police said in a statement, a theory echoed by Security and Justice Minister Manuel Melgar.
“This would be the biggest blow to organized crime in the history of this country” if the money turns out to be the proceeds of illicit activity, the minister told Channel 12 television.
Police remain at the scene searching for weapons and drugs, the sources in the AG’s office said. EFE
