Actress America Ferrera’s Father Dies in Honduras

TEGUCIGALPA – Gregorio Ferrera, father of U.S. actress America Ferrera, died in hospital in the Honduran capital, a medical source said Monday.

The official told Efe briefly that Ferrera, who “was a diabetic,” had other complications for which he was admitted several days ago to Tegucigalpa’s Teaching Hospital, where he died early Sunday morning.

He added that the remains of Ferrera, whose age was not stated, were taken Sunday to the western city of La Esperanza, where he had lived and is to be buried.

Ferrera, who died in poverty, was the father of America Ferrera, who burst into the limelight in the United States with the television series “Ugly Betty,” which won her Golden Globe, Emmy and Screen Actors Guild awards.

America, whose mother is also Honduran, was a little girl when her parents separated in the United States.

The father of the actress was a grandson of Gen. Gregorio Ferrera, who was Honduras’ defense minister in the 1920s. EFE
